Usage of Suponer in the Subjunctive Mood

Suponer generally means “to suppose” or “to assume”, but has several different meanings in the Subjunctive Mood, some of which might surprise you.

To assume or suppose something to be true: for example, Supongamos que tengamos suficiente dinero (Let’s suppose we have enough money).

To imply or suggest: for example, No me suponga cosas que no son (Don’t imply things that aren’t true).

To represent or constitute (informal): for example, Esa actitud suya no suponga un problema (May that attitude of yours not constitute a problem).

To mean or imply (rude): for example, ¿Qué supones con esa mirada? (What are you implying with that look?)

Para este ejercicio, supongamos que somos turistas visitando una ciudad nueva. ¿Qué atracciones nos gustaría ver? (For this exercise, let’s suppose we are tourists visiting a new city. What attractions would we like to see?)

Aunque suponga que no me cree, le juro que estoy diciendo la verdad. (Even if you suppose you don’t believe me, I swear I’m telling the truth.)

A menos que supongamos lo contrario, vamos a proceder con el plan original. (Unless we suppose otherwise, we’ll proceed with the original plan.)
