Gastar Subjunctive Mood in Castilian Spanish

The Subjunctive Mood of Gastar is used to express wishes, desires, doubts, or uncertainties about spending or consuming something, for example: Espero que no gastes todo tu dinero. (I hope you don’t spend all your money.)

Usage of Gastar in the Subjunctive Mood

Gastar generally means to spend or consume, but has several different meanings in the Subjunctive Mood, some of which might surprise you.

To spend money: for example, Aunque gaste todo mi dinero, no me importa (Even if I spend all my money, I don’t care).

To waste or squander: for example, No gastes tu tiempo en cosas sin importancia (Don’t waste your time on unimportant things).

To use up or consume: for example, Aunque gaste mucha gasolina, llegaré a tiempo (Even if I use up a lot of gas, I’ll arrive on time).

To wear out or deteriorate: for example, Aunque se gaste la suela de mis zapatos, seguiré caminando (Even if the soles of my shoes wear out, I’ll keep walking).

To make a joke or tease (colloquial): for example, Aunque me gaste bromas pesadas, no me enfadaré (Even if you make mean jokes at my expense, I won’t get angry).
