These examples demonstrate the use of “estar” to describe availability and readiness in European Portuguese. Each example is followed by its English translation.
General Availability
- O médico está disponível para consultas hoje à tarde.
(The doctor is available for appointments this afternoon.) - Desculpe, mas o gerente está ocupado de momento.
(Sorry, but the manager is busy at the moment.) - O novo modelo de telemóvel já está à venda nas lojas.
(The new mobile phone model is already available for sale in stores.) - O elevador está fora de serviço para manutenção.
(The elevator is out of service for maintenance.) - A biblioteca está aberta até às 22h hoje.
(The library is open until 10 PM today.)
Readiness
- O jantar está pronto, podemos comer.
(Dinner is ready, we can eat.) - A equipa está preparada para o grande jogo de amanhã.
(The team is prepared for the big game tomorrow.) - Os bombeiros estão a postos para qualquer emergência.
(The firefighters are at the ready for any emergency.) - O carro está em condições de fazer a viagem longa.
(The car is in condition to make the long trip.) - Os atletas estão aptos para a competição após os exames médicos.

Unavailability
- Infelizmente, todos os bilhetes para o concerto estão esgotados.
(Unfortunately, all tickets for the concert are sold out.) - O restaurante está lotado, teremos de esperar por uma mesa.
(The restaurant is full, we’ll have to wait for a table.) - O livro que procuras está em falta de momento.
(The book you’re looking for is out of stock at the moment.) - A piscina está em manutenção e não pode ser utilizada hoje.

Time-related Availability
- A cafetaria está em horário de funcionamento das 7h às 22h.
(The cafeteria is during operating hours from 7 AM to 10 PM.) - O apoio técnico está disponível 24 horas por dia.
(Technical support is available 24 hours a day.) - A promoção está por tempo limitado, aproveita!
(The promotion is for a limited time, take advantage!)
Service-related
- Todos os atendentes estão ocupados, por favor, aguarde na linha.
(All attendants are busy, please hold the line.) - O sistema de reservas está fora de serviço de momento.
(The reservation system is out of service at the moment.) - O médico está em atendimento, não pode atender o telefone agora.
(The doctor is attending patients and can’t answer the phone now.)
Technology-related
- O Wi-Fi está disponível em todas as áreas do hotel.

Remember, “estar” is used in these examples because we’re describing temporary states of availability or readiness. These conditions can change, unlike inherent characteristics described with “ser”.
