Mentir Future Tense in Latin American Spanish

The Future Tense of Mentir is used to express actions that will take place in the future, for example: Mañana no mentiré a mis padres. (Tomorrow I will not lie to my parents.)

Usage of Mentir in the Future Tense

Mentir generally means “to lie” or “to tell an untruth”, but has several different meanings in the Future Tense, some of which might surprise you.

To lie or deceive: This is the most common meaning. For example, Mentiré a mi madre sobre dónde estuve anoche. (I will lie to my mother about where I was last night.)

To exaggerate or embellish: It can also mean to stretch the truth or make something seem bigger than it is. For example, No me creerás, pero te mentiré un poco sobre lo grande que era el pez que atrapé. (You won’t believe me, but I will exaggerate a little about how big the fish I caught was.)

To mislead or misguide: It can mean to intentionally lead someone in the wrong direction, literally or figuratively. For example, El ladrón mentirá a la policía sobre su paradero. (The thief will mislead the police about his whereabouts.)

To pretend (colloquial): In some contexts, it has a more playful meaning of pretending or acting. For example, ¿Quieres que mentiremos ser espías por un día? (Do you want us to pretend to be spies for a day?)

Cuando llegue la hora de pagar la cuenta, mentirá y dirá que olvidó su billetera. (When it’s time to pay the bill, he will lie and say he forgot his wallet.)

Para no herir sus sentimientos, mentirá a su abuela sobre lo que piensa de su comida. (To avoid hurting her feelings, he will lie to his grandmother about what he thinks of her cooking.)

Cuando nos pidan referencias, mentiremos y diremos que trabajamos más tiempo en nuestros antiguos empleos. (When they ask for references, we will lie and say we worked longer at our previous jobs.)
