Usage of Vender in the Present Tense

Vender generally means to sell or to vend, but has several different meanings in the Present Tense, some of which might surprise you.

Literal meaning: To transfer goods or services in exchange for money or other compensation, for example, El vendedor vende manzanas en el mercado. (The vendor sells apples at the market.)

To deceive or trick: To mislead someone, often for personal gain, for example, Mi hermano me vende la idea de que estudia mucho, pero en realidad no lo hace. (My brother sells me the idea that he studies a lot, but he really doesn’t.)

To reveal or expose (colloquial): To disclose information or reveal someone’s secrets, for example, ¡No me vendas! Prometí guardar el secreto. (Don’t sell me out! I promised to keep the secret.)

To exaggerate or embellish (colloquial): To present something in an overly positive or exaggerated way, for example, Vosotros me vendéis la idea de que es un buen trabajo, pero yo no lo creo. (You’re selling me the idea that it’s a good job, but I don’t believe it.)

To betray or turn against (colloquial, rude): To abandon someone or a cause, often for personal gain, for example, ¡Eres un traidor! Nos vendiste a la policía. (You’re a traitor! You sold us out to the police.)
