Mentir generally means “to lie” or “to tell an untruth”, but has several different meanings in the Future Tense, some of which might surprise you.

To lie or deceive: For example, Mentiré a mi madre sobre dónde estuve anoche. (I will lie to my mother about where I was last night.) This is the most common meaning, referring to stating something untrue with the intent to mislead.

To exaggerate or embellish: For example, No me creerás, pero te mentiré un poco sobre lo grande que era el pez que pesqué. (You won’t believe me, but I will exaggerate a bit about how big the fish I caught was.) This usage implies stretching the truth or making something seem bigger or better than reality.

To be unreliable or untrustworthy (colloquial): For example, Ese mecánico siempre mentirá sobre el trabajo que hizo en tu coche. (That mechanic will always lie about the work he did on your car.) In this sense, mentir suggests a pattern of deception or lack of honesty.

To disappoint or fail to deliver (colloquial): For example, Esta nueva película mentirá a todos sus fans con un final decepcionante. (This new movie will disappoint all its fans with an unsatisfying ending.) Here, mentir implies that something will not live up to expectations.

Para evitar problemas con la ley, mentirás sobre tu edad cuando vayas a fiestas. (To avoid problems with the law, you will lie about your age when going to parties.)

El equipo de fútbol mentirá sobre sus tácticas para sorprender al equipo contrario. (The soccer team will lie about their tactics to surprise the opposing team.)
